Transcript: A Virtual Support System (Long Distance)

It's difficult to keep the balance certainly with such a demanding work. It's a work that has no hours. You don't go home at 5:00 and forget about everything, so it's particularly difficult to keep the balance between work and life. Everyone has their coping ways, and they way I do is to really rely on my support system. It's very important for me to have social connections, really good friends that I can talk to. When I was in graduate school, my closest friends were my peers in school but I also had friends outside academia; people that had nothing to do with science, nothing to do with the university environment at all, and that for me was very refreshing. It was refreshing for me to go home and meet people that have a completely different walk of life.

Today, I kept the same spirit of really cultivating these friendships. Something I want to emphasize here is that the lifestyle of a scientist is somewhat nomadic. You jump from one temporary position to another, and you relocate a lot. It's difficult to keep your support system that way, so the way I do is to use internet, phone whatever I can to keep my friendships going long distance. In this way, I have some sort of virtual support system which is as good as people that could be more close geographically.
